Comment: I can count the number of times I’ve seen WALLEYE CHEEKS on a menu on one hand. Furthermore, I can count them number times I’ve seen them listed as an entrée on one finger - and that time was today.

When I realized @sportsmansreloaded was participating in the @potosibrewingco #cavealefishfry contest the last thing I expected was the see “freshwater scallops” listed as one of their Friday specials, but as soon as I did my mind was made up. I sampled a delightful bloody, a snit of Cave Ale, and had the fancy feast in front of me well before Canada completed their comeback against the Fins.

If you’ve never had walleye cheeks, do yourself a favor and seek them out. The meat is exactly as the name implies - a supple chunk just behind the eye of the fish that is known as a bit of a delicacy. This plentiful pile was simply divine, boasting a velvety texture and a hint of sweetness that held a stark contrast to the wispy, generously-seasoned beer batter. I got to watch the do-it-all owner/cook/bartender make the Cave Ale-infused batter right in front of me and was taken aback at just how light and flaky it stayed. Expertly done.

The fries were billed as steak fries, and were basically just nice thick julienne-cuts. They were fried right and well portioned - not too many not too few. The tartar was a tangy batch and was very good, but the cheeks were so engaging and so flavorful I ate a bunch of them sans-sauce - which, if you know me at all, says a lot about how good these chunks truly are.

Finishing off the plate was an overflowing cup of slaw that was bold and bright and tasted like it was made fresh that day. If there was a failing with this Fish Fry it’s the fact there wasn’t any bread, IF there was a failing…

New Glarus has always held it down when it comes to Fish Fry and the current crew of the @glarnerstube, @otthauspubandgrill, and @sportsmansreloaded continue to crush it. Overall, we highly recommend this Fish Fry and think it’s in your best interest to get cheeky with it before it leaves the menu. I can’t image a catch this special will stay on the hook forever…
