Comment: We were in Chicagoland for another spring hockey tourney and found a Fish Fry at the @driftwoodgrille that was actually pretty damn good. I know, I was as surprised as you are… ;)
The AYCE haddock runs $22 and comes with all the trimmings including hush puppies instead of a basic bread. The first round featured a mid-sized trio of beer battered flaky white fish that started things off right. The batter had a little heft but a smooth texture that didn’t totally crush the delicate meat. By and large it was very good and coupled with the garlic tartar sauce to for a uniquely alluring flavor combo. I’d definitely get it again.
The fries were stranded Julienne-cut freezer fries but well-portioned, and more than did the job. Fish, tartar, fries: all good, but that’s when things got a little interesting. In lieu of typical cabbage for their slaw the DG uses Jicima and it was definitely…different. The root veggie was incredibly crunchy, a little sweet, and totally unique. While I didn’t hate it, I can’t say I loved it either…your mileage may vary. Rounding things out (pun intended) were a couple hush puppies, and unlike the crumbly cornmeal balls I’m used to, these puppies were doughy, dusted in powdered sugar, and sweet…almost like a desert. They were really tasty albeit totally unexpected.
Truth be told, the haddock was good, but the walleye finger appetizer my player got was waaaaaay better. The walleye bites were soft and velvety and graced by a light, generously-seasoned breading. It was a superb app and if I were to go back I’d see if there is some way they could parlay it into an entree for sure. As it stands, we recommend the AYCE haddock and certainly aren’t mad at it.driftwoodgrille.com
