The Fish Fry at Jerzy’s Eagle Crest isn’t big, it isn’t fancy, and it isn’t expensive, but that’s exactly what makes it great…good fish, for a good price, in a relaxed, no-nonsense atmosphere. Sign me up.
I chose the $15 3-piece cod on this, our maiden voyage, but a 4-piece perch is also available along with some other options. All come with the standard sides including a choice of potato, although when cheesy hash browns are an option is there really a choice to be made? My cod fried alarmingly quickly and was plated with care - it looked about as elegant as a 3-piece fish at a bar can look.
As far as 3-piece cod Fish Frys go, this one checked every box. The fish was light and flaky and home to an equally light and flaky breading. It was accented appropriately by a thick and zesty tartar that I’d wager came from a big old Sysco jar (for the record I think Sysco tartar is A-OK). The roll was grandma’s basic bun and the slaw was a tangy vinegar-based blend. All standard, all perfectly on-brand.
The final tally belonged to the cheesy hash brown casserole and this one was stole the show. This scoop of funeral potatoes was enough to raise the dead with some serious ooey-gooey goodness and absolutely unwieldy caloric count. I packed it in without batting an eyelash and would gladly have taken a larger hit of these supreme spuds.
When I hit a dive bar for a Fish Fry I don’t need big, I don’t need fancy, and I certainly don’t need expensive. I just want a good meal at a fair price and that’s exactly what I got on my way to Summerfest this Friday.
