Comment: If you ever find yourself in Canada make sure to try the bluegill. Likewise, if you ever find yourself at Dexters Pub do the same its like Canada South, theres bluegill everywhere!
While that might not be 100% true, the Canadian Bluegill at Dexters is pretty remarkable and will make you feel like its all around you. The $13.00 plate comes packed with nine or so of the small fillets and theyre nothing short of pure munching pleasure. The mild fish is kissed by a light breading with just the right amount of seasoning to make you stand up and say, Oh Canada! Its a dish of bliss especially when accompanied by a big old handful of Dexters signature waffle fries.
If spud cruncher is your name, then these waffles are your game. They are crispy yet supple with a spicy coating that makes you wonder what everyone else is doing wrong. They are perfect as far as waffle fries go, and will have you grinning from ear to ear and bite to bite. I promise.
The perfection extends to Dexters homemade tartar which is big and bold, and complements any of their fish (especially the bluegill) perfectly. Its a classic blend but has a little something extra to go along with a thickness quotient that has increased dramatically over the years. This stuff is like glue, but way tastier (unless youre a 5 year old, then thats up for debate).
Like so few places in town Dexters pairs their fish with a slice of real rye bread, and while it may miss the modernist palate, the Fish Fry purist in me cant get enough. Its got all that stank, and pairs oh so well with Dexters equally pungent homemade, onion-loaded slaw. Its what Fish Fry is all about. Well, besides the fish
While Canada might be where bluegill originates its home is clearly at Dexters. This is some of the finest fish Madison has to offer and will keep you coming back for more and more and more. Overall, we highly recommend this Fish Fry and think its pretty gosh darn great, eh.
