Comment: I was looking for a dive bar with a Fish Fry and I found not only a great dive, but an even better Fish Fry.
Club LaMark is basically a Madison institution and despite the fact they are known to have delectable dive bar food, I’ve only been there once for their fish - big mistake. Since my last visit in 2018 they’ve added perch and bluegill to their Friday specials and I couldn’t resist the $14.25 sunfish.
All the fish come with some interesting side choices - fries/mac-n-cheese/ hush puppies and slaw/potato salad/cottage cheese. It was a tough call but I stuck to the standard fries and slaw although all the options sounded awesome.
The bluegill arrived in due time and while it didn’t look overly impressive to the naked eye, keen observers of the Fry know better. The understated basket had all the hallmarks of the great Fish Fry (aside from the bread). The five bluegill fillets sat front row center and were nothing short of outstanding. They were fatter than average, perfectly-fried, and home to a lip-smacking breading. Each moist morsel paired perfectly with the ultra-thick and creamy tartar that clung like crazy, the way few tartars can. Impeccable.
The crinkle-cut fries were as basic as they come, but the slaw was something special. While I couldn’t put my finger on exactly what made the slaw shine, shine it did. Great stuff.
Once upon a time, Club LaMark was not a place for the faint of heart. It had a rep (see the sign) but as their food has evolved so has their image. It’s now something of a foodie darling and a welcoming place for folks of any ilk. Overall, we highly recommend this Fish Fry and think they’re worth a vote (or two) in the Potosi Fish Fry contest.
