Comment: Turn Key recently placed a renewed emphasis on the fact they are a supper club so I figured we’d better swing by and see if anything had changed. From what I could gather, not all that much actually. That’s not to say Turn Key is bad in any way, it just doesn’t scream supper club to me.
Their menu does have some supper clubby fare and we started with the hush puppy battered curds. The cheese chunks were stretchy, gooey, and incredibly plentiful and as such could have used a hint more or their homemade ranch. Not a bad start and certainly up to the supper club standard.
The 2-piece haddock followed and was nicely done. The pieces were dense, meaty and fall-apart flaky. They were skinned by a light beer batter with a smooth flavor. Each fat fillet produced a tiny bit of oil but not a drop stuck to the fish. A fat stack of shoestring style fries sidled up to the fish and were expertly crisped.
The tartar came in a small remekin and didn’t quite keep pace with the fish but brought a great zip to everything it touched. A crumbly, herby biscuit was good but could have been even better with a little butter (there was none on the table), while the zesty homemade slaw practically stole the show. Best slaw I’ve tasted in a while for sure.
Supper Clubs are all the rage all of a sudden and I couldn’t be happier to see the traditionally family-run establishments thriving in 2025. While I’m still not sure Turn Key truly fits the mold they do serve some damn good food. The Fish Fry was easily recommendable and the rest of the food that graced our table was well received. Bottom line, this is a good Fish Fry, supper club or not. #mff #madisonfishfry #fridayfishfry #haddock #saltwaterfish #supperclubwww.turnkeymadison.com/
