The breading looked really herby but had an excellent salty flavor. While it didn't hold together all that well it was still delicious despite necessitating a fork. I sampled the cod as was well and would say it shared stunningly similar characteristics.
The cheesy potato scoop was delightful and fully took me back to the athletic banquets of yore. The tartar was a bit dilly for my tastes, and while I used it up, I wouldn't say it improved the fish all that much.
The slaw was ultra-creamy and had a unique flavor...I'd assume it was homemade. Grandma's dinner roll wasn't, but was still soft and fresh and provided the necessary palate cleansing.
Overall, this was a really solid Fish Fry and we'll definitely be back, not only because it's relatively close, but also because it's relatively tasty.Remington's is becoming our go-to when we're in a hurry and need a can't-miss Fish Fry. Both their walleye and cod are consistently excellent and it's close enough the rink and our house that we can get there without it getting too late. This Friday I went for the cod with a side of cheesy hash browns since I've had the walleye a bunch recently and wanted to change it up a little.
Remington's was humming and the fish showed up no more than six or seven minutes after we ordered. It was piping hot and needed a minute to cool so I dove into the funeral potatoes first. The scoop is more than meets the eye and the greets your tastebuds with creamy goodness - this is comfort food at its finest. The cod also adds up to more than the sum of its parts with its fantastically flaky meat pairing with a superbly-seasoned breading. Yum.
The house tartar is a unique blend, and while not an ultra-rich supper club style sauce, it enhances the delicate cod in appreciable ways that a thicker sauce wouldn't. It's a well thought out combo and one that keeps us coming back for more. The slaw is also unique, but a little subtle for my tastes. Rounding things out is a crusty and inviting dinner roll that's quite a bit better than the tear-off variety.
Remington's has really dialed in their recipe over the years and is putting out one of the best, and most consistent, Fish Frys in the far west side/Middleton area. Overall, we highly recommend this Fish Fry and will undoubtedly be back again soon...wait, when's practice again???Unlike our last visit, when we pulled in around 8pm this Friday the dining room was still packed. But, also unlike our last visit, there wasn't a bar crawl going on, so there were a few bar-adjacent tables open. The little man and I grabbed a high-top, I grabbed a cold one, and the bartender grabbed our curd order. The white cheddar curds came quick, were nothing less than exceptional, and totally satisfied our craving. The fish followed soon after and looked immaculate.
I went for the $18 walleye again since I was so pleased with it last time around, and this fat fillet fell right in line. This freshwater finster was gifted Rem's superbly seasoned breading and was as flaky as can be. The chubby chunk was so hearty it was actually hard to handle. I resorted to a utensil numerous times, scooping heaping forkfuls of the delicate meat into the dilly homemade tartar. Yum.
A bountiful ball of cheesy hash browns was devilishly decadent and delicious, a crusty dinner roll was a step above the tear-off style, and the house slaw was inoffensive but relatively tasty.
Remington's is moving into failsafe territory for me, and that's a great spot to be in. I love places that I know are going to be consistently excellent and never let me down - these are the places I come back to time and again. Overall, we highly recommend this Fish Fry and feel like these shots are pretty much always on target.I had the walleye at Remington's in Cross Plains a while ago and enjoyed it, but after this visit, I think the cod is the way to go. The well-seasoned breading works better with this flaky fish and makes for seriously satisfying snacking. It pairs pretty well with the dillier-than-average tartar which gives it just enough of a kick and improves the overall impression.
The scoop of cheesy hash browns are something special with their thick consistency and rich flavor, the slaw is uniquely inviting, and the roll rolls on.
This was my second 3-piece of the day and probably the better of the two (and the first on was pretty dang good). Overall, we'd recommend this Fish Fry and are pretty happy Remington's is right down the road.
We rolled into Remington's around 7:45 and the place was jumpin'. While the bar was hot, the dinner crowd had cooled and we had our choice of several spots in the dining room. We picked a high top, ordered a couple drinks from the observant waitress, and grabbed a quick $20 worth of @wsm_pulltabs. When the drinks came out our orders went in - walleye and cheesy hash browns for the coach, cod and fries for the player.
Despite my best efforts I only made it about half way through my old fashioned before the fish appeared...it's not that the drink was bad, the kitchen was just dialed in. At first glance I could tell the fish was different from that in my memory and while the batter I remember was good, this current crust took things to another level. I quickly finished the OF, used my BOGO from the @madcitycocktails on @oldstylebeer, and got to work.
The walleye fillet was a good size - not the biggest I've seen, but plenty meaty and blessed by some of the tastiest breading I've had recently. I didn't have the time or the desire to try and dissect the coating but it was nothing short of excellent. If I had to guess there were probably some unicorn kisses... perhaps a few slices of heaven...maybe a little MSG too. Who knows? Who cares? It was magic.
The tartar is also seemingly unique to the tavern and enhanced the plethora a spices in the breading without drowning them out. The cheesy hash browns were up to any grandma's standard, the crusty roll was a step above the norm, and the slaw had a mild flavor and also appears to be homemade.
I've liked Remington's since the first time I stepped foot in the door and always thought their Fish Fry hit the target, but this one was a straight up bullseye. Overall, we highly recommend this Fish Fry and think you'd be wise to give it a shot.
