Comment: As the sun sets on our Hawai’i vacation what better way to end it than with a Good Friday Fish ‘n Chips from the aptly named Maui Fish'n Chips?
During a bit of pre-travel searching I settled on MF&C after reading several stellar reviews. I’m happy to say these reports were far less blustery than the wild Maui winds and this fried cod was indeed legit. Four petite pieces come with the adult-sized order and each was home to a decadent, yet light batter. Similar the to mahi mahi I enjoyed at lunch, this batter was 100% grease-free and complimented the cod very well. It paired perfectly with the standard tartar, but was also delicious with the volcano and (apparently brand new) special fry sauces.
Speaking of the volcano sauce, it fittingly comes with the volcano fries for a $1.00 upcharge, and is well worth the buck. The fries were loaded with plenty of the seasoning and there were a lot of them to go around.
The slaw was also abundant (too abundant if I’m honest) and doesn’t come with the Fish ’n Chips, but I couldn’t resist adding the “side” when I saw it in the menu book. It was light and crunchy with a subtle vinegar punch. Yum. As per usual, there was no bread with the Fish 'n Chips…it’s not a true Fish Fry after all.
I was a little shocked to see how many places in Maui have Fish ‘n Chips on their menus (basically every single restaurant). I knew there’d be some (there are some everywhere), but I didn’t realize how prevalent it would be. It would be quite an endeavor to try them all, and one day maybe I will…Maui Fish Fry, anyone??? For now, I was really happy with the couple I got to sample on our weeklong vacation with this one being the better of the two.
