Comment: It felt like a good night for a drive and since I had a place out of town in mind we took one.
I heard through some sources that the Anchor Club II in Brooklyn had a worthwhile bluegill Fish Fry and after having cod for lunch the freshwater finster sounded just right. We got there pretty early and joined the numerous families with young children in the bar - you gotta love small town Wisconsin. The lone bartender was busting butt and soon after snagging a high top table we gave her our order - bluegill with cheesy potatoes for me, and cod with fries for the kid. The plates hit the table about halfway through my old fashioned and looked smashing.
Both fish share the same light panko-style breading but it worked better with the 7 bluegill fillets. The crunchy coating was relatively unseasoned which let the flavor of the panfish shine through. The cod was also fine but really needed the tartar to perk it up.
Speaking of the tartar, it was a hearty mix, thick as can be with plenty of pop. For sides diners can choose slaw or cottage cheese and my finely-chopped slaw offered plenty of punch...the cottage cheese was standard. For my other side I went for the cheesy potatoes and the scoop of gooey hash browns were off the chain. Deeeeeeliciois. The kid’s fries were alright as well.
For $17 you can’t ask for much more than the bluegill at the Anchor Club II. It’s a heck of a deal that’s even more appealing with the $5 off or BOGO drink from the @madcitycocktails book. If you’re looking to get out of town some Friday it’d be worth your time to drop anchor in Brooklyn.www.facebook.com/anchorclubII/
