Comment: A few months back a coworker told me there were a couple places near his house that were always slammed on Friday nights - one of which being the recently renovated Crossroads Bar & Grill.
From the reports I received the CR changed hands not all that long ago and along with a remodel they added a whopper of a Friday Night Fish Fry. There are a bunch of specials on the menu: Cod, “Jumbo” Perch, Walleye, and Bluegill among them, and when I saw that the Bluegill was available at lunch as well as dinner I didn’t hesitate. I was the lone patron at the bar at 11am this Friday, and as the ladies prepped for the day, I had a couple beers, a handful of pulltabs, and my fish order in. It came in due time and aside from the baked beans (which “weren’t ready yet” and the unexpectedly absent slaw) it looked freakin’ fabulous.
The five bluegill fillets were done up just right - kissed by a light breading and perfectly fried. Each bite had a delightful subtle snap and just enough of that fishy bluegill flavor. It paired perfectly with the tremendously-thick, crazy-clingy and superbly-sweet tartar. Zing! The side of hash browns with cheese and onion were idyllic, and the slice of fresh marble rye with softened butter was oh-so-satisfying.
The Crossroads isn’t exactly Madison-adjacent, but since I had an appointment on the East Side and it was a nice day for a drive I figured, what the hell? It turned out the drive up 51 was well worth it, and I have no problem considering this a true destination Fish Fry. Overall, we highly recommend this one and can’t wait to come back to sample the rest of their impressive Friday menu.www.facebook.com/p/Crossroads-Bar-and-Grill-100091707434981/
