Comment: Wow. Pretty impressed with the Fish Fry at the Driftelss Social in Mt. Horeb.
It all began with a superb Makers Mark Olf Fashioned and some of the best Cheese Curds we’ve had recently. These curds were lightly-battered and had an almost fluffy feel to them. $14 is steep for cheese, but when it comes to curds sometimes you get what you pay for. About two seconds later my wife ripped off a $99 Pull Tab and things jumped up a notch (and made us feel even better about the “luxury” appetizer). All in all, an amazing start.
We enjoyed the drinks (and knowing our bill was at least half covered) for a few more seconds before the food showed up...it came alarmingly fast and fresh out of the fryer. As I tend to do I wasted no time ripping into my plate since I love my fish scalding hot. The $28 walleye was large and in charge and too hot for even me to handle. As luck would have it this fillet wasn’t finger food anyway as the crumbly breading and flaky meat necessitated a fork. While it killed me to not be able to eat with my hands I did what needed to be done and enjoyed the fruits of my labor.
There are a few sides to choose from, but when Smokey’s hash browns are on the menu there’s really not a decision to be made. These were the classic chunky hash browns from the fabled supper club and they were simply superb. The tartar was also excellent, and while I’d typically drain a cup this size in seconds the walleye was so good it didn’t really even need the boost.
The little rye roll was a unique addition and the finely-chopped slaw was a joy to eat. Both helped round out the plate nicely and put a beautiful bow on this fancy Fish Fry.
Truth be told we didn’t even intend to drive to MoHo this Friday but sometimes fate intervenes and you end up checking a box off your wishlist in the best way imaginable. Overall, we highly recommend this Fish Fry and think the DS is a great spot for a nice Friday night out.www.facebook.com/driftlesssocial/
