Comment: Minnewaska Fish & Chips and “Wisconsin Cheese Curds.” Pretty decent for a Saturday lunch in Chicagoland…

The bluegill was the real deal and the six fillets were massive for the typically tiny sunfish. The batter wasn’t quite as light as advertised but had quite a bit of flavor. There were still notes of the freshwater fish here and there but by and large the batter dominated.

A heap of shoestring style fries resembled a bed of straw beneath the school of bluegill and made for a substantial substrate for the sunfish to rest its bones. The tartar was pretty basic but made each bite marginally better. The slaw didn’t really do it for me, but that’s no big loss. The curds were hand-breaded and totally legit - deserving of the “Wisconsin” moniker.

Overall, this was a pretty decent Fish Fry for not being a Friday night special and not actually being billed as such. It had all the hallmarks of the real thing and I think I still warrants some recognition. In all honesty the haddock we had at the dive last night was better, but I’d definitely stop by O.R. again next time we find ourselves in Elgin.
