When the Hen House Bar and Grill breezed through their bracket in the @potosibrewingco Fish Fry contest I knew I needed to try it at some point. When I realized Forestville was basically on the way to our landing spot in DoCo I knew that point would come sooner rather than later. See, we head to Door for a weekend every spring and since Forestville is a quick detour off 57 our visit was seemingly written in the stars.
The coop’s list of Friday Specials is vast, but when I’m on the peninsula I lean lake perch and when our waitress assured me they were the “small” ones I was set - although that smelt piqued my interest for sure. We barely had time to get a sip off our drinks before the fish emerged from the kitchen looking freshly fried and absolutely stunning.
At first glance I could tell this perch was the real deal. It was home to a crunchy breading that stole center stage and took over diminutive fish. The fish itself looked the part but did have a mild fishy flavor which isn’t expected from yellow perch. It was still tasty, but much better when bathed in the near-perfect supper club style tartar sauce.
There are a bunch of potato styles to choose from and I went for waffles over the standard battered fries. I did get to sample some of each though, and while the waffle were wonderful, the battered were better. The slice of pumpernickel rye was soft and stanky, and the slaw had a serious horseradish blast that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Thanks to the Potosi Fish Fry contest I became aware of a bunch of new Fish Frys across the state. While I was a little surprised by some of the winners, most of them seemed to make sense, and now I can say the Hen House fits squarely in the well-deserved winner camp.
