Comment: $17.00 Bluegill Fish Fry from the Stone Porch in Verona. Not bad. Not bad at all.

When we pulled in at 7:00 this Friday the parking lot at the SPA was pretty packed, the actually porch (patio) had a ~20 minute wait, but the bar and dining room had plenty of seating. We grabbed a bar table (so we could catch the Crew) and had our selections in in due time.

The fish arrived mere minutes after we ordered and looked really nice. Five fillets make up the portion and were hulking (as far as bluegill goes). The fillets had a nice snap and the subtle fishy essence you expect, but I’d wager they were farm-raised or possibly even crappie due to their mass. Either way, they were tasty and complimented by a lovely LIGHT breading. I emphasize “light” here since I also sampled the cod, and its batter was anything but. Wowza. Much too much.

The fat fries that came along did their job, but not much else, the tartar was pleasant, pungent, and plentiful, and the colorful slaw appeared to be Sysco standard. Grandma’s dinner roll rounded out the plate and was about as basic as it gets.

The Porch has been through a few permutations over the years - Grey’s Tied House and the Boulder Brewing Company among them, and I feel like the SPA a little more of the same. It’s good in-offensive family-friendly food in welcoming environment that appeals to the masses. As far as the Friday Fish Fry goes, it’s also appealing on a number of levels and I’d come back for the bluegill.
