Comment: We came, we saw, we conquered…actually, I think The Ridge conquered us. I’m going to be full for a while.

The Ridge is a supper club in the purest sense - great food, good prices, low on the frills. The seafood selections are on the daily menu, and since I had cod for lunch I went for the small (single) walleye, with an additional saddle of frog legs added on.

I chose pan-fried for the walleye which is lightly-breaded instead of battered - I typically like my freshwater fish better this way. This fillet was on the small side, but fall-apart flaky and delicate. The breading was thoughtfully seasoned which let the flavor of the fish shine through to some extent. I went the other way with the frog legs, and while the beer batter was tasty, I should have gone pan-fried here as well…live and learn. Both items were good, but next time I’ll hit up the beer battered cod with not one, but two saddles of pan-fried frog legs.

While my seafood selections were satisfactory, the star of the show was the hash browns with cheese and caramelized onion. This whopping portion was nothing less than extraordinary boasting crispy bottoms and two kinds of melty cheese. Simply top-notch. The tartar was the thick and delicious supper club style which took everything it touched up a tick.

All dinners come with a trip through the Ridge’s substantial salad bar and while I could have easily loaded up a second plate I restrained myself to one. I piled my lone platter high with greens, potato salad, coleslaw, cottage cheese, and the coup de grâce - pickled herring. I also added a cup of potato & ham soup and a dense multigrain roll. It was all excellent.

I’ve know about The Ridge for what seems like decades, but it was always “out of the way,” or temporarily closed, or there were “closer, better options.” After tonight I think I can safely put these rumors to bed - they were open, the food was great, and the drive was well worth it. Overall, we highly recommend this Fish Fry and can’t wait to slide over to St. Joseph again. The Ridge rocks.
