Comment: “For a limited time only” isn’t a term I love when it comes to Fish Fry. Of course, when a place like Butterbird is doing it over the remainder of the summer I can’t help but take notice.

Butterbird instantly became the standard in fried chicken in Madison and you have to figure if they fry chicken well, fish can’t be far behind. The limited time Fish Fry is walleye with all the trimmings and runs a full-on 19 bucks.

The walleye is beer battered, which admittedly isn’t my favorite preparation of the freshwater fish - give me a light breading any day. This batter isn’t wimpy either but is fried to a beautiful golden brown. It maintained a bit of the signature walleye musk, and like their crispy chicken, was virtually grease-free.

The bird’s fries are also expertly done and a favorite of our 10 year old. The tartar was as abundant as I’ve seen, but more like ranch than a traditional tartar. A bitty buttered baby dinner roll was a super addition as was the peppy purportedly homemade slaw.

Butterbird is an awesome spot and their chicken is pretty damn good. The Fish Fry doesn’t quite reach those same heights, but is still recommendable in my opinion. Personally, I’d love to see what the chicken breading would be like on the walleye and if I had to wager a guess I think it could be legendary. Dare to dream, MFF. Dare to dream…
