Comment: When in Rome…or Gillette, WY in this case.

We lucked out and @onthehookcod was in town this Friday and posted up at the @tractorsupply so we got to sample their legit quasi-Fish Fry. In all honesty, I wasn’t too excited about the other options I found around town so OTH being there was truly a godsend.

The 3-piece Fish and Chips runs $14 and you can add more for $4 a pop (which is something you might actually want to do since each “finger” is pretty slim). The cod is line-caught (which is nice) and clearly high-quality. The fish is pure and flaky and highlighted by a tasty beer batter that wasn’t light but wasn’t a wet sock either. It was all in balance and easy to eat especially when accompanied by the zippy homemade tartar.

Since this is a FnC affair the only other thing to review were the fries and these spuds were surprisingly average all things considered. They were good, solid freezer fries, but I guess I was expecting more for some reason. I still ate them all and never looked back so take that for what it’s worth.

When I first heard we’d be in Wyoming on a Friday night a sense of dread definitely washed over me. I figured it would be a “make the best of it” situation, but as they say God works in mysterious ways. The big man upstairs did us a solid tonight and blessed us with what I can only imagine is the best fried in fish in Gillette (when they happen to roll into town). Overall, we recommend the Fish and Chips from On the Hook and will hopefully catch them again one of these days.
