Comment: A quick jaunt down to New Glarus gave us a chance to take a lap at Whiskey Run to sample their Fish Fry and killer curds.
The Friday specials span cod ($16), perch ($18), and walleye ($18) and my walleye was certainly a chubby chap. The meat was flaky yet had a surprisingly soft feel. While you might expect that texture to come from a greasy beer batter this coating was anything but. It was medium-thick, but not heavy or oily. It actually complimented the fat fillets well which is something beer batter doesn’t typically do with freshwater fish.
A thick and tangy tartar went toe to toe with the flavorful fish and elevated its flavor profile, while a smattering of freezer fries sat shotgun and just sort of did their own thing. The slaw was bright and inviting and the little ciabatta bun was a nice change of pace.
Whisky Run is a really nice place and just far enough outside of town that it doesn’t feel totally out of the way. Between the distillery, the banquet space, and the winery there is a lot going on, all of which seems to fit together well. As for the Fish Fry, it was well worth the drive and we’ll certainly be back with the whole family soon…hell, I might just make a special trip for another round of curds; they were THAT good!whiskeyrun.com/
