Comment: I asked for opinions on where to get a good Fish Fry up in Wausau and got a bunch of wonderful suggestions from supper clubs to local faves. I settled on Hoehn's Huddle once I read the description of their lake perch: "not farm raised or a distant cousin…" Music to my ears.
We huddled up around 5:45 and I had my 3/4 of a pound not long after. At first glance I could tell this perch was true to its billing - 100% the real deal. Once the big squeeze bottle of tartar hit the table I plowed into it and was greeted by pure pleasure. This perch was nothing less than phenomenal. It was totally grease-free, wonderfully flaky, and kissed by a light breading with a bevy of seasoning. It was easily some of the best perch I’ve had recently and maybe some of the best I’ve had ever…and I’m not even kidding. Top notch.
As I mentioned, the tartar came in droves and the flavor matched the allotment - it was big and bold with a tang that played perfectly with the perch. The fries were crispy and inviting, the slaw did its duty, and the pre-buttered slice of marble rye was a most welcome addition. All in all, they supported the fish in all the ways they should without trying to be something they’re not supposed to be. Loved it.
While Hoehn’s isn’t a fancy supper club (we drove past the Palms and it was packed) they do their Fish Fry every bit as well as those places do. The perch was superb, the haddock I sampled was also excellent, and the atmosphere was inviting as can be. The owner even came around, shared some of his Packers memorabilia with our kids, and just really seemed to enjoy doing things right. Overall, we highly recommend this Fish Fry and think it’s likely the best non-imposter perch in town. I hate imposters...well, I don’t hate them, but I don’t like them near as much for sure.
