Comment: Just off the beaten path in Wisconsin Dells there a great little place called the Sand Bar. It’s a true Wisconsin tavern smack dab in the middle of the tourist Mecca, and in this great little place you’ll find a great big Fish Fry.
The SB has cod and perch all day and even though there is a combo available, I just couldn’t help but go all-in on the legit lake perch. For $17.50 the basket comes piled high with five fat fillets, enough fries to elevate them above the rim, a big cup of slaw, a smaller one of tartar, and a full slab of Texas Toast. It looked like heaven, and by 1:30 I was famished so I tore into it.
At first bite I could tell the perch was the real deal and fried the right way. Instead of a bulky beer batter, a light breading with a subtle seasoning graced the chubby fillets and allowed every sweet and delectable morsel of meat to shine. It was very well done and enhanced ever so slightly by the semi-sweet homemade tartar.
The bed of fries were also expertly fried and ultra-crispy. Despite the fact the fish rode on top of them not a one got soggy since the perch was totally grease-free. The slaw had a nose-tickling horseradish finish and the toast was a step above a basic dinner roll.
Every year at this time I head to Mankato with the boys for a hockey tourney and typically stop in La Crosse before I cross over to the wrong side of the river. This time around I figured I’d switch it up and try a place taking part in the Potosi Fish Fry competition (and I’m glad I did). The Sand Bar lived up to whatever hype I’d placed upon it, and totally knocked this one out of the park. Overall, we highly recommend this Fish Fry and will be back to bury ourselves in the sand again someday soon.www.sandbardells.com/
