Comment: While Fridays in Illinois aren’t quite the same as Fridays in Wisconsin you can find a decent Fish Fry if you look hard enough. Case in point - the Icelandic Cod from JT’s Porch Saloon & Eatery.

We showed up after our first hockey game of the weekend (around 7:30) and JT’s was bumpin’. We found the only open table (crammed near the Golden Tee) and wedged our way in. The waitress came over right away and took our order on the spot since we didn’t need a menu and she could see we meant business - curds and Fish Frys for these Wisconsin boys.

The fish came promptly and was a sight for sore eyes. Clearly hand-breaded and fried to order, these loins looked the part. The batter was light and crumbly with enough seasoning to make it interesting. It was good enough to eat on its own which was a good thing since the tartar was the thin and ranchy kinda sauce that tastes ok, but doesn’t do much for the fish.

The shoestring style fries would make Ronald McDonald blush, while the quartet of hush puppies that served as the requisite starch were equally alluring. The slaw wasn’t anything special IMO, but the curds more than made up for it…probably the most legit curds I’ve seen outside of the Cheddar Curtain.

When you’re in Chicagoland you take the good (hockey tournaments) with the bad (traffic) and Friday dinners are no exception. While this wasn’t the best Fish Fry I’ve ever had it was pretty damn good all things considered and I’d have no problem recommending it. In fact, I might just go back when we’re down there again in a couple weeks…stay tuned.
