Comment: It’s was my wife’s birthday. Despite that fact she still had to work so I celebrated on her behalf with a quick lunch at the Hop Haus. I know, I’m a great husband.

The Hop Haus’ new location in Fitchburg is a lot larger and fancier than their original Verona taproom and has a full food menu all the time (including a Fish Fry). I strode right up to the bar, ordered a Hazy and a 2-piece, and settled in. The beer was cold and the fish fried fast…the birthday girl would have been pleased.

The 2-piece was just the right amount of food for lunch. The pieces were chunky and home to a substantial beer batter (as expected). Brewpubs and taprooms tend to go a bit heavy with the beer batters since, and the HH was no exception. This rendition had a rich flavor that complemented the chubby loins well, although it did leak some grease. Thanks to my diligent flipping the errant oil didn’t fully saturate the coating and the flaky fish still paired admirably with the thin yet tangy tartar.

A paper tray of battered fries was more than meets the eye, and the slaw, while extremely plain looking, had a pleasant mellow flavor.

The new Hop Haus is a sharp looking space and the Fish Fry was satisfying. It’s a bit of a haul form Middleton but if you find yourself in Fitchburg, or work at Sub-Zero, do yourself a favor and check it out.
