I guess everything is bigger the closer you get to the UP and that includes the Fish Frys. The $14 bluegill from the Country Bar in Niagara is an incredible deal if ever there was one.
A total of twelve, yes 12, freshwater fillets were splayed across the plate like some sort of Jackson Pollock painting. And like the art, they may have looked haphazardly placed, but each was an elegant bit of sunfish-y sophistication. While the fillets varied in size they were all equally delicious with the same subtle fishy flavor and bold breading. It was crushable, and bolstered evermore by the thick and zippy tartar. A+ stuff.
There aren’t any sides to choose from and the fries (while bountiful) were about as basic as fries get. Some creamy slaw also came along for the journey, but wasn’t my favorite, while the pre-buttered marble rye warmed my heart.
Unlike Madison, there aren’t a million options when it comes to Friday Fish Fry up here, but with a couple places like the Country Bar maybe there doesn’t need to be? Overall, we highly recommend this Fish Fry and think it might be the best deal we’ve ever seen…and that’s no hyperbole. Best. Deal. Ever.
