Comment: Sometimes you take a drive. Sometimes you get a Fish Fry. And sometimes you take a drive to get a Fish Fry; those are the best (some)times.

A buddy told me about the Fish Fry at @threewatersreserve over a year ago, but we weren’t necessarily in a rush to hit the creekside establishment near Brodhead. Sure, I was intrigued by the setting and the shots I’d seen of the food, but Brodhead is…well…Brodhead. i.e. it’s a hike. The stars just kind of aligned this Friday - slow day at work, beautiful weather, friends in town, so we finally jumped in…and I’m glad we did.

TWR features mostly BBQ-y things, but on Fridays and nice selection of fish finds their menu - cod, walleye, bluegill, and sometimes trout (but not this Friday). I threw a line in on the $19 bluegill and sampled a few bites of the $18 cod as well. The sides are BBQ-style and I settled on a duo of roasted garlic mashed potatoes and signature slaw. I also availed myself of the spoon bread and creamy mac & cheese from the kid’s cod order (he had no interest in either).

The ordering system is quasi-cafeteria style - place it and pay as you walk in, find a table, and it’s brought to you when ready. The quintet of bluegill was standard for the sunfish - light and snappy with a wispy breading that let the flavor of the fish through. It paired nicely with the homemade tartar which highlighted some of the fishy undertones.

As for the sides, all were pretty much excellent. The garlic mashed were textbook, the slaw had a great zip, the mac and cheese was spectacular, and the spoon bread featured bits of corn and was much more of a dish than actual bread. It was new to me and I’d 100% get it again. The slice of toast on the side was also excellent and highlighted by a rich garlic butter or something similar. Divine.

The Reserve is a great place and I doubt anyone would argue that fact. As for the Fish Fry, it was good, and while I don’t know that I’d make the drive for it all the time, I would make it again sometime. Overall, we recommend this Fish Fry and think it’s easily worth reserving a Friday for.
