Comment: When our weekend camping trip fell through my Friday Fish Fry plans could have went right along with it…but I’ll be damned if I was about to let that happen. I’d done the research, and we were going to stumble into the Stumble Out come hell or high water.

Lyndon Station is a solid hour north of Madison but when I proposed we just slide through the Dells on the way back home my pivot turned into a slam dunk with the family. We got on the road early and hit the hopping main drag around 5:15pm. We burst into Mac’s, grabbed the only open table, and gave the no-nonsense waitress our orders faster than you can say, Tom Foolery.

The Friday specials at the SO are numerous and I went for the 6-piece lake perch since it looked like legit yellow perch in their Facebook photos. The $12 price tag seemed too good to be true, and when I saw the plate I realized it was. These pieces were massive (for perch) and I knew right away pike-perch was in play. I quickly adjusted my expectations and got down to business.

For starters, this is a hell of a lot of fish for $12 and each slender fillet was kissed by a superbly-seasoned signature breading that was so light the stripes on the skin were still visible. While it was a far cry from real lake perch it is undoubtedly the best pike-perch I’ve had. It paired remarkably well with the thin, yet surprisingly clingy, tartar. The side of skin-on freezer fries was also inviting and a small step up from standard Sysco crinkles.

The slaw was tangy and abundant, and the ciabatta square was taken to the next level by a drippy cinnamon butter. Yum.

There are a few intriguing local bars in Lyndon Station, Norm’s and the Swagger Inn among them, but I was thrilled with our choice of Mac’s Stumble Out this Friday. Overall, this one is easily recommendable and has me thinking about what else we can do in the Dells on the way back through…as if I actually need an excuse stumble around the Station!
