Comment: Classic Tavern Fish Fry from the Sundown Saloon last Friday.
While there’s nothing truly remarkable about this one, it’s a good solid Fry for a fair price, which is a-ok by me. The cod looked to be middling quality - a little translucent, but still relatively flaky. Even so, it was highlighted by a light breading that was ultra-crispy with just enough seasoning to make you take notice. It was bolstered significantly by the cup of thick and creamy tartar.
There are a surprising amount of sides to choose from, but when “or we can do hash browns” passed the bartenders lips my only response was “cheese and onion?” Her subtle nod sealed the deal. These spuds would make even the greasiest diner green with envy and were easily the darling of the ball. I’d order them 10 times out of 10.
The roll was basic while the homemade-looking slaw was coarsely-cut and creamy. Both were just alright, but 100% necessary.
For years I’ve meant to for my shadow to grace the Sundown and it just took the stars to align. Overall, we recommend this Fish Fry as-is, but liked it even more thanks to the BOGO from the Madcity Cocktails book. Get that book, eat that fish, and enjoy a moment in the Sun.www.facebook.com/SundownSaloonMadison/
