Comment: When we go to Door County we always take a day trip out to Washington Island. This sub-trip typically falls on a Monday or Tuesday and KK Fiske's has always been closed when we’ve gone. This year we hit the Island on a Wednesday and the fabled bar was open for business which made our lunch pick an easy one.

KK’s is a seafood specialist with “Fresh Lawyers” being their calling card (when they’re available). Unfortunately, Lawyers (Burbot) run mostly in deep cold waters and mid-August isn’t exactly conducive for their capture. Perch and walleye still grace their menu and since I’d perched the night before the walleye basket made the most sense to me.

The walleye portion isn’t huge, but for a $17 lunch it didn’t need to be. The freshwater fillet was split into three finger-licking, lightly-breaded chunks. Each piece was fall-apart flaky with the subtle walleye musk I simply adore. It was punctuated by hearty dips in the thick and zesty tartar and my trio disappeared in an instant.

A boatload of shoestring style fries took over the remaining 2/3 of the blue basket and did their duty. With the basket you get a choice of fries or slaw, but I couldn’t do without both so I added a gigundo cup of $3 slaw on the side. This slaw was coarsely-chopped, but fresh and creamy. It was some of the best I’ve had in a while and well worth the up-charge.

Our friends have told us for years the KK’s has some of the best food and ambiance on the Island, and after finally being able to stop in I’d have to agree. Overall, we highly recommend this Fish Fry and Washington Island in general. Schoolhouse Beach, shots of bitters at Nelsen's, and now the fish at Fiske’s…Island life is sure is grand.
